how to edit the border Property in Dxdesigner ??
Wire and Terminal Weights
How can wire and terminal weights be handled in Capital Harness XC & Capital Library? What are the Units of Measure?
What exactly does the demonstration mode in PADS Layout limit? (PADS 9.5)
Hi,
Sometimes I'm unlucky and none of the floating licenses are available while I need to open PADS Layout. The software tells me that it will start in demonstration mode instead. What exactly does that mean? Can I plug a USB dongle in while in demonstration mode?
I was unable to find anything in the help files when I search for "demonstration mode" - there's mostly only warnings that the software may open in said mode. I could not find any discussions of exactly what the limitations are either. I am mainly interested in the following scenarios:
a) I open Layout from within Logic to quickly change a decal or prepare a board outline.
b) I open Layout from within Logic to send the net list and push an eco to pcb due to minor changes in the schematics.
I suppose demonstration mode means I cannot use any of the following functions:
- cannot save, or save as
- cannot export
- cannot create a PDF
- no CAM functions
- cannot EDIT or NEW in the library (however, right-click an object and 'Save to Library' seems to work)
Sometimes I can reserve time for a USB dongle but forgot that I started the software in demonstration mode. Usually I just exit and restart the software after I attach the dongle, but what happens if the dongle is removed while PADS Layout is running (i.e. licensed)?
1. Will it switch to demonstration mode?
2. If the dongle is plugged back in, will I be able to save my work?
3. Specifically, if I started in demonstration mode and attach the dongle at a later point, will it resume in licensed mode?
Note that I think to know that the recommended procedure is to close any software that uses the licenses before attaching a dongle. However, sometimes certain impatient individuals ignore that.
Apologies if this information can be found in the documentation. I was not able to find anything relevant after a reasonable amount of time spent searching.
Sincerely,
Chris

xDX Designer - 2 Names for the Same Net
Check out the below screenshot. In xDX Designer, I went into the Navigator and renamed net R1_LED_LED_SEL_1 to R1_LED_SEL_1 and also changed net R0_LED_LED_0 to R0_LED_SEL_0, but in the screenshot below, it looks as though I have two net names assigned. I have two questions:
- Could you please explain what is going on here with this?
- Could you please let me know what the best way is for renaming nets?
xDX Designer - Shortcut Key to Copy the Letters in a Text Object
In xDX Designer, could you please let me know how to do the following? I am looking to add a key binding that allows me to click on some text in the schematic and copy the text itself to the Windows clipboard. Note - this is different than clicking on a piece of text and pressing 'Ctrl-C' to copy it to the clipboard (this copies the text object that can be pasted somewhere else in the design). I am looking to copy the letters of the text itself so that I can go and paste it into Find and Replace Text dialog box or paste it into the Windows Notepad, for example.
xDX Designer - Shortcut Keys for Right-Click Menu
xDX Designer - Shortcut Keys to Quickly Open/Close Schematic Tabs
In xDX Designer, there are tabs across the top, one for each schematic sheet. Are there shortcut keys or a menu option to quickly close all tabs and quickly open all tabs?
DxDesigner - All Instances of Net Names - Updating & Highlighting
In DxDesigner, if I have the same net on two different pages (that is, I am connecting one component on one page to another component on another page):
- How can I change the net name on one page and have it automatically update the net name on the other page?
- How can I select the net on one page and have it be highlighted on both that page and the other page it is located?
Thanks!
xDX Designer - Highlighting All Instances of a Net By Selecting Net in Navigator
In xDX Designer, is there a way for me to highlight a net in the Navigator and get it to highlight that net on all schematic sheets that it is on?
xDX Designer - Adding MS Windows Standard Shortcut Keys - Ctrl X/Y/P
Please take a look at the below image from my xDX Designer schematic. I have highlighted text in the schematic. I can choose to Cut, Copy, or Paste, but the standard Microsoft Windows shortcut keys for cut (Ctrl-x), copy (Ctrl-y), and paste (Ctrl-p) do not work. Is there a way I could add these shortcut keys?
If so, would I need to add some lines to the exped_wvo.vbs file?
xDX Designer - Shortcut Key for Zoom Function
In xDX Designer, the F4 shortcut key for the FitAll zoom function does not work when nets are highlighted. Is there a way to get this to work at all times?
Examples or Tutorials of DxDesigner or Expedition PCB?
Hello,
I am trying to learn Mentor Graphics DxDesigner to make schematics and layouts but I can't seem to find any good tutorials online.
Are there any examples or tutorials that the community recommends or a book/pdf? I am fairly new to Mentor Graphics.
Any help is appreciated.
DxDesigner - Change Visible Attributes for Group of Parts
In DxDesigner, how can I make the part number visible for multiple parts at the same time?
DxDesigner - Drawing Size & Sheet Border
In DxDesigner, I am trying to change my schematic sheet size from E to F. I am able to change the sheet border from E to F, but I get a rectangular box of size E that remains (please check out the attached screenshot). How can I fix this? In the Navigator, I right clicked on the schematic sheet and changed it to F. In the Settings dialog box, I went to Project --> Boards --> Borders and Zones and changed it to F Landscape. I am not sure what else I can try.
DxDesigner - How to Select a Group of Parts and Move or Cut
In DxDesigner:
- How do I select a group of parts and move them together (not cut and paste) without clicking in each of the parts individually?
- Is there a way to set up the Selection Filter so that I can hold down the left mouse button, draw a selection box around a group of parts, and cut them? When I try to do that, it either doesn't work or it only cuts text.
Packager coughing up rippers
Have a design that passed the Packager previously. Made a couple minor edits, and now every bus ripper in the design is generating the following errors:
ERROR: Block ABC, Page 16, Symbol ripper:
No part data.
No Part Number, Part Name, nor Part Label has been entered.
Please enter some data to enable packaging.
ERROR: Block ABC, Page 16, Symbol ripper:
Duplicate symbol reference ripper on page.
Please replace duplicate symbols.
447 errors like this. Not clear why it's an odd number.
None of my edits were anywhere near a bus. I can't seem to find two rippers with the same reference, either.
I found this tech note:
But I did not change ripper symbols mid design as it suggests as a cause, and running the ripper update twice (and then a few times more) did not fix the issue.
I went in and deleted and redrew several ripped nets, but they still error out.
I have an email into our librarian to see if it's something on that end. It's like the ripper symbol itself is messed up in the central library.
DxDesigner - Copy a Component's Part Number to Windows Clipboard
In DxDesigner, suppose I want to select a part and then copy the part number assigned for that part into the Windows clipboard. How would I do that? In the Properties dialog box for the part, the part number is locked for editing (I can't go into edit mode, highlight it, and press Ctrl-C). In our designs, the library is locked.
Thanks,
Jeff
DxDesigner - Part Pin Numbers vs. Pin Names
How can I get a list of pin numbers versus pin names for a part in a DxDesigner schematic? I am not looking for pin names versus connected nets.
